Wouldn't it be better to donate to the ones much more in need? The places where no one have social security of any kind, where poverty is more the rule than the exception, and where hunger is a stage you are way past.
Like Nigeria...

No, this thread is for donating for those devistated in the United States, this is not an international relief effort here.

I work for Ascension Health and we have a few hospitals located in the affected area. Donations to those hospitals can be sent to:

Providence Foundation
ATTN: Hurricane Relief
PO Box 850429
Mobile, AL 36685-0429
Please make checks payable to “Providence Foundation,” and indicate in the memo section of the check the words “Hurricane Relief.”

Donations to aid those impacted by the hurricane also are being accepted by Catholic Charities USA. You may donate online at www.catholiccharitiesusa.org, or by calling 1.800.919.9338. Checks may be mailed to Catholic Charities USA, Hurricane Katrina, PO Box 25168, Alexandria, VA 22313-9788.

I'd just like to comment on the Hurricane. And on a quote from the Biloxi Mayor..... The Mayor said "This is our Tsunami". Um, no it wasn't. Yes, its devastating, but 25,000 people died in the Tsunami which took place in a third world country. Plus, we had warning (for days!) that a hurricane was coming - unlike the Tsunami situation.

People, if you see a hurricane coming - LEAVE!

www.noahswish.org is a rescue organization that is working to rescue the animals left, injured, or lost during the hurricane. My co-worker here in California is working via internet to co-ordinate and find foster homes around the US for these animals. You can donate via their website through PayPal. Organization was founded by Terri Crisp...a team of volunteers have gone to Louisiana to find and rescue these animals.

Hello,

My name is Richard Ferring and I volunteer for a support website called the Mesothelioma & Asbestos Awareness Center.  I am interested in sharing a valuable resource on your Hurricane Katrina page (chrishammond.com/blogs/archive/2005/08/30/1512.aspx) that could help save many lives.

Many homes, buildings, and other structures were destroyed as a result of Hurricane Katrina.  The devastation resulted in the contamination of the air and water by thousands of toxic substances such as asbestos.  Asbestos, as you know, is the sole cause to deadly diseases like mesothelioma and asbestosis.  Due to the long latency period of these diseases, individuals may not know that they have become ill with mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases until it is too late.

MAACenter offers detailed and comprehensive information on the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of mesothelioma and related illnesses.  We are known as one of the web’s top resources because of a number of our unique resources including an clinical trial database, a interactive physician locator, and daily mesothelioma news.

We also offer a section specifically for those affected by Hurricane Katrina.  Thousands of people may have been exposed to asbestos in one way or another during the disaster.  While not all those that came into contact with asbestos during the storm or the cleanup may feel sick, it is important that they be made aware so that the disease can be caught in its infancy.

We'd love for you to take a moment to review our site (www.maacenter.org) and consider offering a link to it for the benefit of your users.  Spreading awareness is the only way to save lives.

Thanks for your consideration in advance - let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Regards,

Rick
