Can't load c:\program files\steam\steamapps \counter-strike source\bin\filesystem_steam.dll

Can't load c:\program files\steam\steamapps \counter-strike source\bin\filesystem_steam.dll

I am really starting to get sick of that error message when I try to run counter-strike.

I think I'm going to have to do a disk check and start checking for HD errors.

The only way I can seem to connect is if I connect from the server browser of steam, in my favorites.

Found this on another forum with people who had the same problem.

Start Source SDK.
Refresh SDK Content, a new filesystem_steam.dll will be created in
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\grettad\sourcesdk\bin
Copy the new dll to the bin directory of your game.

I don't have Source SDK....
Now what? (And no way i'm going to download it)

I have the same problem with Half Life 2. One day it works the next it doesn't. There does not seem to be any pattern to it!! Does anybody know how to fix this??
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Saturday, January 08, 2005 1:39 PM
Download SDK and refresh content, only way to fix it. It appears when I use the Worldcraft 4.0 World Editor after I used ctrl + alt + delete to terminate the application when it got stuck.

You download SDK by hitting the Download Game button in Steam.

If not, I dont know how you can fix it, sorry.
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 2:17 AM
just delete the bin folder and restart steam. steam will then redownload the folder
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Sunday, January 16, 2005 3:56 PM
how do u "refresh the content"
i've never used SDK
and when i try to start it it says, "Can't load c:\program files\steam\steamapps \sourcesdk\bin\filesystem_steam.dll
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Monday, January 17, 2005 11:18 AM
This is NOT fixed by the 1/17/2005 Update :(

I've updated and still get the error.

i have this problem too but no one seems to have the answer.....
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 2:50 PM
Yeah, I have the same problem too. I've sent it to support@steampowered.com and had no reply. I've looked on steampowered.com forums and support and no-one has the answer. For some people deleting the bin or the file works but for others it doesn't. I'm one of the "others", I can hear my flatmate playing it right now and I can't play - Arrrrrghghhhghghghhh
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 4:14 PM
I have no clue how to fix it but you should try reinstalling half-life 2 and source. that might fix it. if it does tell me
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Thursday, January 27, 2005 4:40 PM
If the people at Source didnt reply your email than its pretty useless customer support.
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Saturday, January 29, 2005 8:12 PM
dont reinstall the game. IF u do ur cd-keyy willn't work. so plzz lets work together to find another way to get it to work.
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Saturday, January 29, 2005 11:15 PM
I know how to do it
U take the Steam.dll file from ur \Steam\SteamApps\e-mail in this file and copy it and put it into the bin file of the half-life2, half-life2 deathmatch, counter-strike: source, Etc. and play the game. it worked for me it should work for u. if u have any questions just reply.
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Sunday, January 30, 2005 11:30 AM
sorry i just tryed half-life 2 deahmatchand cs source and they don't work with what i di so i'm going to try other things but half-life 2 is at least working.
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Sunday, January 30, 2005 11:34 AM
to get half-life2 deathmatch to work u have to copy all the bin files from half-life 2 bind folder to half-life2 deathmatch bin folder and then play it should work it did for me.
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Sunday, January 30, 2005 11:43 AM
i did the same thing as above for cs source and it worked so there u go all of them work and just do the same for the tools any way i don't care about the tools they don't do anything good. well bye and i hope this helps u it helped me. I havent played soucre for 1 month and a half i went out and bought condition zero just to play counter strike so not i'm happy and going to play. bye and again if u have any questions just repley. or email me at jamezealey@hotmail.com

I had the same problem with hl2 except it was c:\program files\steam\steamapps \half-life\bin\filesystem_steam.dll file instead. In another forum it said to put in -game in the launch options. When i played the game it worked perfectly. I do not know if this will work for counter strike source, but have a go.

Here is the REAL fix for this problem, please ignore other suggestions.

--- FIX ---
Search your system for Steam.dll files. You should only have one, in the main Steam folder (next to Steam.exe).

This worked for CS:S, HL2 and HL2DM

Enjoy

You can't download someone else's file and expect it to work. If some of you are getting so worked up playing this game, move on. It's just a game.

I know someone who is having this same problem and I'm going to try some of these fixes today (while backing up his original \bin directory). The guy doesn't even have SP1 installed on his system, so that might be his problem.
Posted By: Anonymous Poster on Sunday, July 17, 2005 12:11 AM
I dont even hav a steam file if someone could tell all the places i can check that would help...

Just purchased the CS Anthology pack, and that "Steam.dll" error pops up. There are no "steam.dll" files on my computer, and none on the disk. What's up with that?
Posted By: Anonymous on Monday, December 26, 2005 2:51 PM
I found that running a different mod, then returning to the buggered one worked.

I have the same problem also i think but i mine is like I load css, everything else works and then css should up with an error saying hl2.exe sorry for the inconvinence... blah blah blah. and then when I check the log it says the filesystem_steam.dll was the problem and i checked with my nerd friend and he says my isnt corrupt it is sumthing to do with the steam. So i dont know what is wrong with mine. Please HELP!!!
Posted By: Anonymous on Monday, February 27, 2006 3:31 AM
WHat for brilliant suggestions! But all this kind of crap with reinstalling CSS or deletin and overwriting this shit will probably NOT work...I tried it all, I swear!!!! I was in other forums and Ifound out that a great majority has not even installed WIndows Service Pack 1 (like me). I think this is the problem! Because all of my friends installed the game(emporio 11) have SP2 and it works, but when I install it there comes this problem where its said: Can't load filesystem_steam.dll -> so it doesn't work and I'm the only person with problems. Why? BECAUSE I HAVE A CRACKED WINDOWS AND CAN't INSTALL THIS FUCKIN PACK. Does somebody know how to get a cracked SP??? Probably not -.-*
Posted By: Anonymous on Saturday, March 11, 2006 1:21 PM
THE SOLVER : i ve got cracked win xp, i reinstaled it and now it works! Try to reinstal whole operation system.

have just bought Half-Life 2: Game of the Year Edition DVD, installed; recieved error: "Exception in Steam.exe (Main) - Cannot load steam.dll" (or something to that effect) Is this a common problem? Fixable?
Posted By: Anonymous on Thursday, April 20, 2006 1:02 PM
I had no problems with HL2DM, CSS, etc, only Half-Life2 gave me the "....filesystem_steam.dll" error. I deleted Steam.dll in the bin folder for HL2 as someone mentioned in this thread, and it works fine now!
Posted By: Anonymous on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 12:10 PM
UPLOAD FUCKING DLL STUPID PEACES OF ***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*** ^&*$!(!()jasfdjhefjmiadf u all!!!
Posted By: Anonymous on Friday, June 30, 2006 6:16 PM
You're all fucking retarded, you're getting this error because your *** is either downloaded, or you're running XP without SP2. if you're running a downloaded version of windows, then guess what, you're assed out. Thats what you get for being losers. Stop asking people to upload the dll, it won't work. Trust me, i tried it on a downloaded version of source on SP1, upgraded to SP2 and bought source. GUESS WHAT?! OMFG it works. So die kthnx.
Posted By: Anonymous on Sunday, July 30, 2006 9:00 PM
What it is, at least for me is that my anti-virus software (F-Secure) is picking up "bin\FileSystem_Steam.dll" as malicious software. Unfortunately, I have not yet figured out a way to tell F-Secure that this file is not malicious and to leave it alone.

Does this sound similar to anyone elses problem at the moment?

Oh man, this still doesn't work for me!!! I have SP2, that new filesystem_steam.dll, i've tried Refresh SDK Content, Reset Game Configurations and re-installing the SDK!! Nothing works?!?! Is there any other way of loading the files so i can view the map i've made?
Posted By: Anonymous on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 4:46 PM

I have had this problem ever since last november and i still haven't been able to fix it. I know that if i clean out my computer and start from scratch (with windows xp) it will work, but so far nothing has fixed it.

Posted By: Anonymous on Saturday, September 02, 2006 1:40 AM
ok not part of this. but i installed half life with source off my dvd with out the steam in stalled or going on line. my filesystem dll error is still there with CS. hl2 works greate..no steam. and its a legal copy. got it to work once and that was it. now i get that Damn error.
Posted By: Anonymous on Friday, September 15, 2006 1:36 PM
I'm not sure if this will work, but in your game bin folder, instead of copying the new FileSystem_Steam.dll file, just cut it (Not copy) and put it in your game folder: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\counter-strike, instead of the bin. This isn't gaurenteed, because when you try to run the game, sometimes steam will re-make the dll in your bin folder. I don't know a way around it then.
Posted By: Anonymous on Sunday, September 17, 2006 11:20 PM
What lenux said - search the steam folder, delete any "steam.dll" that isn't in th main folder next to "steam.exe" this worked for me (although i have no idea where the second one appeared from).

I'm running Vista Premium. No matter what I try, DOD, HL2 will not run. I get the ignorant-assed filesystem_steam.dll error. Have checked every board, post, blog and tech support reference known to man. Have tried ALL suggestions with no change. I don't feel like "getting over it" because I PAID MONEY to have these games. No different than buying anything else say like a DVD and finding out it's DOA then when returning it you're told to get over it. Great answer! The problem I see here is that Vista has a reputation for not playing nice with games and since there is no REAL documented fixes, I don't know whether Valve, Steam or Microsoft is at fault.
Posted By: Anonymous on Saturday, October 06, 2007 1:25 AM

I experienced the filesystem_steam.dll error as well. Found rougue steam.dll in Windows folder and deleted. This was after uninstall and reinstall of Steam client and games. Works now. I tried everything under the sun before and like others, scoured the net and filed request with Steam to help resolve it. they have not replied. I am on a Vista machine and think it entirely ingonorant of people to assume that everyone noting the issue is on WinXP needing service pack 2. That is OLD news. Way past being of help to anyone before 2005.

You can´t install steam in an offline mode. Check your firewall aswell. Steam.ddl and steamUI.dll. About filesystem_steam.dll there´s no solution. Just reinstall steam and all your games.

YES. After days of pain, researching tons of websites, checking out the source of this problem, I finally found the answer. Karel Varel's solution finally worked. All I did were delete the two Steam files in System 32. Days of shit to deal with. Uninstalling steam, uninstalling games, messing with the launch options, tags, upgrading shit, relocating dll, and more. What a pain in the ass. Karel Varel's post will work if you tried everything else. Thanks a MILLION.

Ok kids, I have the same problem as all of you, but guess fucking what? I have Windows 7. So that shit about SP2, not fuckin' relivant. I'm just upset because I have a nice brand new AlienWare desktop that cost me a shitload, and I can't play ANY steam games. With source games, I get the Unable to load c:/program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\username\counter-strike source\bin\filesystem_steam.dll error, but with other games, It does't even load. And the funny part, I can log into the same computer on my steam account, and it works. I don't fucking know.

delete bin folder and it will work,
Posted By: nico heh on Friday, June 24, 2011 5:09 AM
I managed to fix mine =D.... Go into the location it says which should be bin in your counter strike source folder then delete everything in the bin folder its what i did and it works fine!!!!
Posted By: Bob Marley on Friday, September 02, 2011 12:42 AM
Confirmed for me on cs-source. Delete (or cut if you wish) the contents out of the bin folder, and then if you havent already exit steam, restart and try and run the game it will re download the dll's and ta-da youre back in business.

I got mine to work by.. deleting the bin, then deleting gameinfo.txt from the tf folder
